About the Poet

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta in the Jorasanko mansion, to Debrndranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He started writing at a very early age, from his childhood. He composed about 2230 songs, numerous paintings, eight novels and four novellas, and many volumes of short stories, non-fictional essays, and numerous numbers of plays.

Tagore modernized Bengali art and Literature. He rejected the rigid classical forms and by resisted the linguistic strictures. Tagore various works like novels, stories, songs, dance- drama, and essays deal with political and personal topics.

Tagore was a non-European who first got the  Nobel Prize in 1913 for his collection of famous poetry called “Gitanjali”. He was politically active and renounced his knighthood and denounced the British rule and advocated the independence of India both in his writing and practice.

Tagore named Gandhi ” Mahatma” and Gandhi used to call him “Gurudev”. He was truly a Gurudev and wanted to revolutionize the Indian education system and created a model of a new type of university- Visva Bharati in Santiniketan, West Bengal.

Tagore’s many other works are Dak Ghar, Chitrangada, Chandalika, and Shyama, Kabuli Wala, Atithi, Noukadubi, etc.

Tagore died on 7th Aug 1941.

Workers Paradise is a place where people work all day long. They are so concerned about their work that they don’t waste their time if not necessary.

The title of the story “A wrong man in workers paradise” was quite apt. The artist was mistakenly placed in the workers’ paradise. He did no work all day long and sat idle. The little girl too got influenced. The girl who was so concerned about her works started wasting time tying her hair and all other unnecessary stuff.

The elders of the worker’s paradise were anxious because of the man not only the girl but most of the people of the paradise were becoming idle. It was not the same before, the people were very concerned about their every movement and every single minute. But now they waste their time for nothing.

In the story, with the use of satire, the author mocks the perspective of the people towards art.

Summary of A Wrong Man In Worker’s Paradise

There lived a boy who had no work to do. He used to spend his time sitting idle or in mad whims like making sculptures, paintings. Surprisingly he never sat with books but always passed the examinations. He tried to leave all such mad whims but couldn’t as he was habituated.

There was a hope that he would leave this habit soon but before he could do something, he died. Then there occurs a twist in the story, the messenger committed a blunder.

The messenger mistakenly places the idle artist in the “Workers Paradise” where everyone was busy concerned with their works. Their works made the residents very happy that they asked God to bless them with more works.

Every one was so concerned with the work that they used to recite words like “Hurry”, “Time is precious” etc. They never used to waste time in unnecessary actions by all this affected the artist. He used to sit idle all day long on the green meadows.

He was completely unfit for a place like “Workers Paradise”. Sitting idle near the tree, the artist noticed a girl who used to come every day to the silent torrent to fill her pitchers with water. She walked so fast, her hairs tied carelessly, few on her foreheads.

Nothing worried her except her work. One day the girl noticed the artist and feels pity for him seeing him sitting idle, jobless. She tries to help him with some work. He replies that he has got no extra time to spend on works but asks her to lend her pitchers to him.

When she tries to enquire the reason, if he was willing to fill water, they reply that he wants to draw paintings on the pitchers. The girl got disappointed as her painting was nothing but a timepass, arts and paintings were valueless for her. She feels offended and leaves out of frustration.

The man keeps on asking her for her pitchers every day. One day she gets tired of him requesting and reluctantly gives him her pitcher. He drew a few lines and colored them.

The pitcher looked attractive, the girl couldn’t understand the meaning or the reason behind those paintings. She asks him the significance, the purpose behind that painting.

The man replies that its that necessary that a picture must have some purpose or meaning. She was so confused that she left. The beauty attracted the girl so much that she couldn’t sleep at night.

She kept thinking and tries to find out the meaning on her own. There was complete contemplation in the girl. She walked slowly the next morning, seemed confused.

As she walked off the man, she asked him what he wants from her. The man replies that he was to lesson her work pressure, he wants to make a ribbon for her. He weaves the most beautiful ad colorful ribbon for her hairs.

The girl becomes slow in her work. The girl who was so concerned about her work, now she got busy standing in front of the mirror, tying her hairs, dressing up, etc.

Slowly slowly the whole paradise got this disorder. The people of Working paradise got busy in paintings and all other unnecessary works. The work of the ” Working Paradise” got late.

The elders of the worker’s paradise were anxious as it was not the same before, the people were very concerned about their every movement and every single minute. But now they waste their time for nothing.

Then the messengers come and interfere and accept his mistake of placing the wrong man in Paradise. The man was then asked to leave paradise by the elders.

The man was very happy with this discussion and was ready to leave as he never wanted to work. But when the girl heard the news, she too said that she too wants to leave paradise with him.

She got attached to the man. Witnessing this the elders and each one of the paradise were shocked as this was the very first time that something like this happened in the paradise.

Duty:-

The story describes the two worlds: the world of the idle artist and the other people of paradise. The residents were always busy with their work.

According to the time was the only precious thing and so they wanted to utilize it properly. They were happy with their work. The people prayed to God to bless them with such works.

The young girl was so concerned about her work that she carelessly tied her hairs. She moved in a fast-moving towards the silent torrent.

But suddenly everything changed, everyone was influenced by the idle artist.

The elders of the worker’s paradise were anxious as it was not the same before, the people were very concerned about their every movement and every single minute. But now they waste their time for nothing.

Importance of art:-

The author mocks the perspective of the people of the world towards art. The author says that “art for art’s sake” serves the purpose of art. He by presenting the way of the wrong man, mocks the people who never value art.

The people of paradise didn’t value paintings, sculptures, and arts, for them it was just a time pass. They never wanted to invest their time in such a thing.

People even didn’t value the artist. They considered him to be an idle man who misfits in the worker’s paradise.

The girl gets annoyed when the artist asks her for the pitcher to paint. She left thinking that she had no time to waste on such a useless thing. But after the man drew in the pitcher, she was so amazed that she wasted her golden hours observing it.

Characters of A Wrong Man In Worker’s Paradise

The man

He is an artist. The man is the main character or the protagonist of the story. He always used to indulge himself in mad whims. The man used to waste time painting, sitting idle. He was a misfit in Workers paradise.

When the man was mistakenly placed in the worker’s paradise by the messenger, instead of doing work like others he used to sit idle and indulge himself in paintings, sculptures, etc.

He used to lounge around the streets absent-mindedly and obstruct the path of others. The man used to lay down near the streams.

He was also seen spending time on the bank of the torrent, where he met the girl caring pitchers. The man made paintings and ribbons for the girl.

At last, when he was asked by the elders to leave, he was happy as he was a lazy person who never loved to invest his time in working.

The girl

The girl was very concerned about her work, she never used to waste a single minute on unnecessary things. Every day she used to carry her pitchers and go to the silent torrent to fill water.

Her movement was compared to the guitar. She was so busy that she used to carelessly tie her hairs.

When she saw the idle man she felt pity. She tried to help him with some work but got angry when the man asked her for her pitchers.

But after he drew, her paintings amazed her so much that the girl kept observing it. She tried to find the purpose or the meaning behind those paintings.

The girl got very much lost that she became slow in her works. She used to spend more time on her hair and all other unnecessary things.

The girl builds a bond with that man, she was ready to leave paradise with that man at last.

The messenger

He was the in-charge of the idle man, and he mistakenly placed the man in workers’ paradise. He was the reason behind all those changes which occurred in workers’ paradise. 

When the anxious elders called a meeting to look after the reason, he hurried in and accepted his fault and made a confession of his mistake.

The other people

The other people were always busy with their work. According to the time was the only precious thing and so they wanted to utilize it properly. They were happy with their work. Other people prayed to God to bless them with such works.

They thought that spending time observing an art was just a waste of time. For them, there was no value in art.

But after the arrival of the idle man slowly most of them became slow and idle. They started to waste their time on paintings and other unnecessary things.
